A late winner from José Luis Gayà earned Valencia CF a point at home to Deportivo Alavés, and the defender spoke to VCF Media after the final whistle to react to the result.
We prepared to go out and win this game, to practically confirm our safety in the top flight and keep looking for higher positions in the table. We've been just a step off that all season -of getting a couple of wins and latching onto the places above us- but we haven't managed it. The only option is to keep going and to keep pushing -all of us," he explained.
"We have to stay united, because it's a difficult situation and we need to get out of this together. There are few games remaining this season, and we have to get a few points still."
Gayà also lamented the misfortune the team have had in terms of conceding goals, despite being solid in defence.
"It's what always happens with us: Our opponents have few chances, but need little opportunity to score against us. Alavés are a team who work well and who have a positive dynamic going, but the goal we scored came about from very little. We really struggle to score and to create a lot of chances, because we didn't get too many opportunities against a side who defended deep," said the fullback.
"It's what has happened all season: The opposition score after having few chances, and when they don't create goals we gift them opportunities. It's kind of the dynamic that we've had all season. Today we tried to be more organised and more of a unit, but it was all for nothing."
"We know that with two wins we could have looked at the positions higher up, because everything is very tight in those middtable spots. We didn't do it. That's the reality. We are finding it very hard to win games and our only option is to keep together. There are still points to be won, and we have a calendar that sees us play Barça and then Valladolid -tough games. Then we have Sevilla. We've got some hard games coming up; it was necessary to win today and we didn't do that. Now we have to get out of this situation together."
